Background of the study
Trade unions have historically played a crucial role in advocating for workers’ rights and ensuring industrial harmony. In Onitsha North, the presence of active trade unions has significantly influenced labor-management relations in various industries. Unions work to negotiate better working conditions, fair wages, and adequate benefits, fostering a sense of solidarity among workers (Nnadi, 2023). This study explores how trade unions contribute to maintaining industrial peace by mediating conflicts, lobbying for policy reforms, and providing support during labor disputes (Ifeoma, 2024). The research delves into the mechanisms through which unions empower employees and influence organizational policies. It further investigates the impact of union activities on workplace morale and productivity, particularly in sectors prone to labor disputes. With increasing globalization and evolving labor markets, the role of trade unions remains relevant in protecting worker interests while promoting sustainable industrial relations (Okafor, 2023). By integrating theoretical perspectives with practical case studies, the study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of union effectiveness in fostering industrial harmony in Onitsha North.

Statement of the problem
Despite the established role of trade unions, workers in Onitsha North still face challenges related to unfair labor practices and inadequate representation, which occasionally lead to industrial conflicts (Ude, 2023). These issues persist despite union interventions, suggesting gaps in union strategies and effectiveness. There is a need to critically assess the current impact of trade unions on workers’ rights and industrial harmony, to identify areas where union activities are falling short and to propose improvements that can better address labor grievances (Nwachukwu, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the role of trade unions in protecting workers’ rights in Onitsha North.
  2. To evaluate the impact of union activities on industrial harmony.
  3. To recommend measures to enhance union effectiveness in labor dispute resolution.

Research questions:

  1. How do trade unions promote workers’ rights in Onitsha North?
  2. What is the impact of union activities on industrial harmony?
  3. What improvements can be made to strengthen the role of trade unions?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H₁: Active trade union participation is positively associated with improved workers’ rights.
  2. H₂: Effective union interventions lead to enhanced industrial harmony.
  3. H₃: There is a significant relationship between union strength and reduced industrial disputes.

Significance of the study
This study highlights the essential role of trade unions in safeguarding workers’ rights and promoting industrial harmony. Its findings will benefit policymakers, labor leaders, and industry stakeholders by providing evidence-based recommendations to strengthen union activities and resolve labor conflicts. The research contributes to the discourse on labor relations and union efficacy (Okonkwo, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining the role of trade unions in promoting workers’ rights and industrial harmony in Onitsha North Local Government Area, Anambra State. It focuses solely on union activities and their impacts in this region.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Trade Unions: Organizations formed by workers to protect their rights and interests.
  2. Workers’ Rights: The entitlements and protections afforded to employees in the workplace.
  3. Industrial Harmony: A state of peaceful and cooperative relations between employers and employees.
